“Recent Trends in Microwave Techniques and Optical Communication”
Innovations in Physics teaching and research has crossed the boundaries of conventional branches, emerging with new dimensions of understanding and applications, and with this aim, the Department of Physics of The IIS University has organized a two days National Conference from 4-5 February 2015 on the recent trends in microwave techniques and optical communication. The focus of the conference was to provide an opportunity to research scholars, students and teachers to interact with the eminent scientists and educators in the field of microwave physics and engineering photonics, optical fiber engineering etc. and to learn about latest developments in the field.
The Conference commenced at 10.00 am on 4 February 2015 with the inaugural session seeking the blessings of almighty followed by lighting of the lamp by all the dignitaries on the dais, after which the conference Chairperson Dr. Ashok Gupta, Vice Chancellor, the IIS University extended a warm welcome to all the Resource Persons, delegates and students participants.
Prof. Pradeep Bhatnagar, Dean, Faculty of Science, then presented an overview of the science departments of the IIS University.
Prof. K.S. Sharma, Convener of the Conference acquainted the audience with the aims and objectives of the Conference and also made us aware that the year 2015 has been declared an International year light by UNESCO.
Prof. S. B. Chakrabarty from ISRO, Ahmadabad delivered the keynote address on the use of electromagnetics in day to day life. He in a very interesting manner discussed the history of electromagnetics and then threw light on satellite microwave communication , microwave remote sensing, radio astronomy and microwave thruster in various fields of science and communication..
The first technical session began at 12:00 noon and was chaired by Prof. J. Behari. Prof. A.C. Kumbharkhane from SRTM University, Nanded, delivered the first invited talk. He deliberated on the topic “A time domain dielectric spectroscopy from 10 MHZ to 30 GHZ. He highlighted the fact that this technique is very simple and covers a wide band of frequencies in a single measurement.
Prof. S. N. Joshi, from CEERI Pilani discussed the R & D opportunities in the country and presented the contribution of CSIR-CEERI in respect of vacuum based devices particularly for communication sector in his talk. He also acquainted us with various activities of funding agencies available across the country in different fields.
The third invited lecture was delivered by Dr. Suchandan Pal from CEERI Pilani on basics integrated optic devices for communication and sensing. His presentation covered an overview of design, fabrication, characterization and application aspects of various passive photonic integrated optic components.
The Second technical session chaired by Dr. D.C .Dube Retd. Professor, IIT Delhi. This continued by Prof. S. Chakrabarty from ISRO Ahmedabad. Dr. Chakrabarty introduced the principle of microwave remote sensing payloads for earth observation and highlighted the different types of microwave sensors in this talk.
Existence of low level electromagnetic fields in the environment was discussed by Prof. J. Behari, from Jawahar Lal Nehru University, Delhi in his talk “Electro Pollution and Environment”. He also drew attention to the biological effects of the recent advancement in mobile communications.
Day two opened with the third technical session chaired by Dr. K.B. Sharma, Principal, S. S. Jain Subodh College, Jaipur who welcomed our distinguished guests. Importance of RF and Microwave technologies in respect to its potential in defence medical applications, communication system,s, security, imaging and power generation was discussed by Prof. Sandeep Sancheti, Vice Chancellor, Manipal University.
Prof. D.C. Dube, IIT Delhi, informed the audience about the microwave processing of advanced materials both in the microwave magnetic field and in microwave electric field and presented very interesting experimental results.
Technical Session IV was started at 12.45 pm after a short tea break. Dr. R. K. Khanna, Prof. & Dean, Research, Vivekanand Global University Jaipur charied the session.
Prof. K. P. Maheshwari from DAVV, Indore delivered his informative talk on progress in the development of high power microwave source therapy and experiments. An analytical and numerical investigation of the amplification of plasma waves by a relativistic electron beam was also discussed.
Prof. Deepak Bhatnagar talked on “Design and Performance of Planar Antenna for Modern Wireless communication System’. He informed the audience about the requirement of compact size antennas with larger bandwidth. His talk dealt with few such antennas which were designed at their centre and which may be applied in modern wireless communications systems.
To encourage scientific research among students and faculty, research paper presentations were also scheduled on both the days. In all, 19 faculty members and 24 students shared their research work through oral and poster presentations. The IIS University also awarded best oral and best poster presentation in each category. The Chairperson for oral presentations on day 1 was Prof. Rashmi Jain, Dept. of Zoology, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur and on Day 2 the session was chaired by Prof. Deepak Bhatnagar The presentations were evaluated by a panel of esteemed judges. The judges for the oral presentation were Prof. D.C. Dube, Prof. J. Behari and Dr. V. K. Saxena and the judges for the Poster session were Prof. Deepak Bhatnagar and Prof. K. P. Maheshwari.
